Discharge and return home

Returning home marks the beginning of your recovery period.

At the Bordeaux Colorectal Institute, everything is organized to ensure that this transition takes place under the best possible conditions, with safety and close follow-up by the surgical team.

Discharge approval

Discharge is decided by your surgeon.

Before leaving, your surgeon or the care team will provide you with all the documents necessary for your follow-up :

  • A discharge letter for your general practitioner, summarizing the procedure and postoperative course,
  • Prescriptions for postoperative treatments (pain medication, nursing care, nutritional supplements, etc.),
  • The operative report,
  • A sick leave certificate if needed, adapted to your type of surgery,
  • The date of your postoperative appointment, usually scheduled one month after the procedure.

Postoperative blood tests

In some cases, your surgeon may prescribe postoperative blood tests (blood work, blood count monitoring, renal function, inflammatory markers, etc.).

These tests help ensure proper recovery and allow early detection of minor complications.

Results are sent directly to the surgical team, who will review them and contact you if any treatment adjustment or additional consultation is required.

In case of emergency or questions after discharge

Even after returning home, you are never alone.
In case of unusual pain, fever, bleeding, significant abdominal distension, or any concern :

  • Bordeaux Colorectal Institute secretary (during office hours): +33 5 47 50 15 75
  • Clinique Tivoli-Ducos (outside office hours): +33 5 56 11 60 00

In case of a life-threatening emergency :

  • Call 15 (SAMU emergency services), or
  • Go directly to the nearest emergency department if necessary

Postoperative follow-up and support

Follow-up after your procedure is an essential step in your recovery.

The Bordeaux Colorectal Institute team remains fully committed to ensuring continuous, coordinated, and safe care—from hospitalization through your return home.

Your follow-up is managed by a dedicated multidisciplinary team :

  • Your surgeon, your main medical contact. They validate your discharge, oversee immediate postoperative care, and see you again during the follow-up consultation (usually one month after surgery). Your condition can be reassessed at any time if needed.
  • The coordinating nurse, who ensures smooth communication between the surgeon, community nurses, your general practitioner, and all other care providers involved in your pathway.
  • The stoma care nurse (stoma therapist), if a stoma has been created, who continues your support at home, helps you manage daily care, and regain confidence and independence. She remains available for advice and personalized follow-up.
  • The psychologist, available whenever needed to provide emotional support and facilitate your recovery and adjustment.
  • The nurse specialized in sexology, wound care, and healing, who provides specific postoperative follow-up, including early identification of sexual dysfunction and appropriate management to restore comfort and quality of life. She also manages wound care, particularly complex wounds, and establishes precise dressing protocols for community nurses, ensuring optimal healing and continuity of care.
  • The dietitian, who ensures continuity of nutritional follow-up, including gradual reintroduction of food, prevention of malnutrition, and personalized guidance according to your type of surgery.

Our goal is to support a complete, smooth, and personalized recovery, helping you return to your daily life under the best possible conditions.

The Bordeaux Colorectal Institute is committed to providing every patient with continuous, compassionate, and coordinated care, focused on your quality of life.

Your Care Pathway

At the end of the consultation or during your hospitalization, the surgeon may suggest that you participate in a research protocol, such as a study evaluating a new surgical device, a new method of administering it, new surgical techniques, personalized therapeutic strategies, etc.
